Helena Hotspot

Today was hot. So hot that I didn't feel like cooking dinner. So, after feeding Mr. Bubby Doo, Jeff took over while I went on my dinner quest.
I've been driving by this new place on my way to my Weight Watchers meetings (ironic). It's called Louie's Casa Diego. I think it's been open for about two months. It serves authentic Mexican food and an amazing assortment of creative hot dogs and sandwiches.
The owner and chef, Louie, was there to greet me and right away we struck up a conversation.
I ordered the breakfast burrito (trying to stay somewhat healthy this week). He set about to cooking it.
I asked him how business was. "Crazy," he said.
I asked him how he started cooking. "My grandmother taught me."
I also found out that Louie is a single father of an 18-year-old and he has two grandchildren. Before he started cooking he tried to pursue the dream of being in a band and he worked at Frontier Pies in Helena before it closed- so- he also has a knack for pie cooking.
Originally from San Diego, Louie has been here since the early 90s.
As you can tell, we had a pretty good conversation.
He made a point to tell me that you know a good restaurant based on whether or not you can see your cook and see what he's doing and whether or not he can tell you what he's doing.
He did just that. He held up my burrito as he made it to show me what he was putting on it and asked "Yes" or "No" on certain extras. I took them all though.
I'm also really excited to type this- and I hope to God my sister-in-law Jen reads this at one point. But, HE MAKES THE SPECIAL SAUCE! Seriously.
Long story short: Right after Jeff and I were married, we went to visit his family in San Jose. His sister took us out for a night on the town and we were starving after the bars closed. She took us to this little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant called La Vic's. Since we went there, I have dreamt and craved this special salsa sauce that they put on their tacos, burritos, nachos and pretty much everything else ending with "os."
This guy makes it! I almost cried I was so happy.
I HIGHLY recommend this hot spot to anyone who hasn't gone there yet. If you can't find it, let me know and I will go there with you.

Hey Sarah! I must have heard the story calling because I just happened to stop by your blog. That is so funny, but I don't know if I will believe it before I have a chance to taste it. So you know that we will be going there next time I'm in town :) I'm so happy for you though. Isn't it amazing how food can be so addicting. Luv you all!
